About Digital X-rays

While dental examinations allow practitioners to check for signs of gum disease and tooth decay, many issues can lie beneath the surface. This includes between the teeth, under the fillings, in the bone, or beneath the gums. Made Ya Smile Dental uses digital x-rays to view these hidden parts of your mouth as a diagnostic tool to see your mouth more accurately and in greater detail. More than that, digital x-rays are safer than using traditional film since they reduce exposure to radiation by 90 percent.

Our dentists use digital x-rays as an efficient, minimally invasive tool as part of your exam to diagnose a number of problems, like impacted teeth, abscesses in the jaw, bone loss, or cysts. When we are able to diagnose these conditions as early as possible, we can offer less complex treatment options for patients. Who Is a Good Candidate For Digital X-rays?

Digital x-rays are taken yearly as part of a general dental examination or if you are experiencing pain or other symptoms in a specific area of your mouth or jaw. While x-rays are considered safe for individuals of every age, our staff takes measures to ensure your safety, which is why we ask any patients who are pregnant or might be pregnant to let us know at the beginning of your appointment. This allows us to take special precautions for your health and minimize the amount of radiation you receive. X-rays help our general dentists evaluate any threats to your oral health that may not be seen simply by looking in your mouth.

How Do We Perform Digital X-rays?

Made Ya Smile Dental takes x-rays at the start of your annual exam or biannual cleaning. The process for taking the images is digital, which means it is much faster and more comfortable than traditional film, usually taking less than ten minutes. When taking the x-rays, our dentists place a small sensor in different parts of your mouth just next to your teeth. Then the images are transmitted digitally to your patient record. Once we bring up the x-rays on our computer, we can evaluate the different areas of your mouth together and point out places of interest or concern.

What Happens After Digital X-rays?

At your first visit with Made Ya Smile Dental, our practitioners will either take a panoramic x-ray or a full series of x-rays so we have a thorough understanding of your teeth and jawbone. This evaluation is done every 3 – 5 years so we can closely monitor any changes in your smile. In between these x-rays, we take bitewing x-rays, also known as checkup x-rays, during routine visits to check for cavities in between the back teeth. Digital x-rays are absolutely useful for diagnosing and understanding dental concerns in the early stages so we can provide options for treatment as soon as possible.

Does My Dental Insurance Cover a Digital X-rays?

As a preventive treatment, panoramic and full x-rays are typically covered by dental health coverage every 3 – 5 years while bitewing x-rays are covered yearly. Before your examination, Made Ya Smile Dental will contact your provider to review your coverage and benefits and inform you about any out-of-pocket costs. Our staff wants patients to get the affordable dental care they need, which is why we offer several payment methods and flexible financing with CareCredit®.
